An Exquisite Neoclassical Marquetry Commode in the form of Giuseppe Maggiolini, Northern Italy, 18th Century
An elegant and finely executed neoclassical commode in the form of Giuseppe Maggiolini, the celebrated Milanese ébéniste of the late 18th century. Crafted in richly figured walnut, the commode features three drawers with exceptional marquetry inlay in boxwood and other fruitwoods, retaining its original brass escutcheons and keyplates. The top drawer is framed with a delicate band of alternating stylized floral rosettes, while the lower drawers showcase classical floral and foliate inlays, culminating in a central radiating fan medallion — a motif closely associated with Maggiolini’s workshop. The commode is raised on tapered legs with linear inlay, further emphasizing the clean architectural lines characteristic of the neoclassical style.
