A 19th Century Japanned and Lacquered Papier-Mâché Box in the shape of a clamshell, the top decorated with a painted landscape of hills, trees, butterflies, and chrysanthemums, opening to a red interior, and reminiscent of kai awase or “shell matching”, a game popular in the Edo period, where interiors of clamshell pairs were painted with various scenes and the challenge was to match not the scenes, but the outer shell patterns
